Primary school
The Zijlwijkschool is a quality primary school located in the Merenwijk area of Leiden, offering education for children aged 4 to 12 years. The school operates across two locations that are nearby. The gym is about 50 meters from the school, and both the petting zoo and library are within walking distance. A large grassy lawn in front of the school is where the children play and have physical education during the summer.
Identity
The Zijlwijkschool is an open Protestant Christian school. The Christian values are reflected in the positive and welcoming atmosphere we foster at school, in our interactions and care for one another.
Way of working
We follow a curriculum-year-class system, which is common in the Netherlands. Each student completes a specific amount of learning material in a year, which is generally taught in class. Additionally, instruction is often given in smaller groups. The school’s approach works at three levels:
- Children needing extra help (with adapted materials)
- Average students
- Children who are more advanced and benefit from enrichment materials
English
At Zijlwijkschool, we begin teaching English from group 1. Our lessons are based on pop music, using the song’s theme to teach various English topics and vocabulary.
Future-oriented skills
As children today grow up in a digitally rich environment, we integrate digital education into our daily routine. We focus on using and maintaining Chromebooks, Snappet tablets, classroom computers, and digital blackboards. Older students also learn to process and present information through various digital programs. We emphasize media wisdom, discussing values and norms related to internet use.
Writing: The Combination of Digital and Manual
Writing is more than just putting words on paper. It is an important skill. For the development of handwriting, however, we choose to write on paper.
In addition, the children use a notebook daily, even when they are working with Snappet. Alongside digital work, they also complete tasks on paper in workbooks. For example, they write down math strategies or create a word web during language lessons. The children also receive a weekly written dictation to further develop their writing skills.
